Turning bad habits into healthy ones

Trying to wean yourself and your family members away from sugary colas and other calorie-laden and carbonated beverages? You’ll be inspired to get your blender and juicer out of the kitchen closet after reading Wai Lana’s Favorite Juices, the recently released juice and smoothie recipe book created by PBS syndicated TV host and yoga teacher Wai Lana.

“For many years I’ve kept nutrition simple by adhering to one standard—the brighter the food, the better,” explains the Malibu, CA-based fitness guru. The jewel-like colors of her fruit and vegetable juice and smoothie creations will appeal to kids and grownups alike.

To ease headaches and anxiety, try the Red Raspberry Zinger, a blend of raspberries, pears, basil leaves, and sparkling water.

Wai Lana’s children often call her the Ginger Queen because of her fondness for this flavor, which helps stimulate metabolism and promote weight loss. For an easy Sweet Ginger cocktail, blend fresh ginger with pineapple and plums.

Need an energizing breakfast for on the run? Citrus Sunshine fills the bill, a tantalizing blend of pink grapefruit, tangerines, and persimmons.

To get your daily dietary fiber without too much bulk, Wai Lana created Blackberry Blend, a mix of fresh blackberries, frozen banana, and water, which can be boosted with protein powder and maple syrup.

Need a burst of energy mid-morning or late afternoon? Sweet Clover combines clover sprouts, broccoli, arugula, and apples for a green beverage that helps to purify your blood.

During flu season, mix up a batch of Miss Scarlet as a preventive tonic: red bell pepper, tomatoes, cauliflower, beet, and cilantro.

Find your spirits lagging this winter? Winter Revival blends red potato, carrots, parsley, and horseradish root to get you out of the doldrums. And no matter what the weather, who wouldn’t benefit from a glass of Liquid Sunshine, a creamy juice blending arugula, apples, parsnips, and parsley.
